Tooling Modification to Eliminate Secondary Process
OEM referred a customer to Sur-Flo Plastics with a unique problem with their current molded in color Cover. The finished assemblies they were receiving from their molder were not acceptable to the OEM, because they were displaying too many flow lines. The interim solution was to paint the Cover to conceal these imperfections.
Sur-Flo Plastics examined the parts and determined the cause of the flow lines were from multiple gate locations, resulting in no real consistent flow of material. We proposed a tool change to have one long fan gate which would allow for the material to flow more uniformly and minimize the amount of visible flow lines.
The customer transferred the tooling to Sur-Flo, and we went to work on modifying the tool. We also developed a sophisticated post molding station with a guillotine to precision cut the gate to maintain appearance requirements. The tool change to add the long edge gate was a success, and Sur-Flo gained new business and saved the customer upwards of $30 in unnecessary outside processing!
